Here are the top 10 best eats you can find in this small eating place along Upper Thomson.

Sembawang Hill Food Centre

#1 – Lai Heng Char Kway Teow

Introduction:

Lai Heng Fried Kuay Teow stall is one of the favourites of regulars at Shunfu Market & Food Centre. It has a loyal following from its Lakeview food centre days since the 1970s. We love that they were generous with the amount of eggs too. However, the char in the char kway teow was lacking. We were told that Lai Heng’s char kway teow usually carries a distinct smoky aroma.

Menu Items:

  • Char Kway Teow (Price $2.50/$3)

Location:

Sembawang Hills Food Centre #01-15
590 Upper Thomson Rd, Singapore 574419

#2 – Khoon’s Katong Laksa & Seafood Soup

Introduction:

Khoon’s Katong Laksa & Seafood Soup at Sembawang Hills Food Centre serves another variation of the  Katong Laksa , but it is less well-known than other options. Compared to other styles of Laksa, they do not add that much coconut milk so you would find it easy to slurp without being too cloying.

Menu Items:

  • Katong Laksa (Price $3/$4/$5)
  • Sliced Fish Soup
  • Fried Fish Soup
  • Seafood Soup

#3 – Ping Kee Popiah

Introduction:

The greens utilized are extremely fresh. Filled with crunchy bean sprouts, eggs, ground peanuts, and braised turnip, the dish was created to make a myriad of textures on the tongue and provide a scrumptious, flavor-filled bite. The thinly sliced turnip was much sweeter than the standard popiah mix, but we found them equally as scrumptious.

Menu Items:

  • Popiah (Price $5.40 for 2 pcs)
  • Kueh Pie Tee (Price $5.10 for 4 pcs)

Location:

Sembawang Hills Food Centre #01-32
590 Upper Thomson Rd, Singapore 574419

Introduction:

The Food Seng Huat restaurant serves Teochew-style braised duck, which has a unique and light sauce. Personally, We enjoy Teochew-style braised duck calling the braised sauce delightfully aromatic and well-suited with steamed rice. Ultimately, however, the preference is entirely up to you! The queue can be quite long during the weekends, though if you head here too late, it might be sold out as well.

They sell the Chwee Kueh here in portions ranging from 4, 6, or 8 pieces. Chwee Kueh sold here in this stall is chewier and more firm than you may have noticed elsewhere. The savoury chye poh is fried with dried shrimp that gave it a nice hint of umami.

Introduction:

The bee hoon is first fried with chile, shern, and peanuts before it’s submerged in a sweet spice mixture. We felt that the mee ram was not fragrant enough, and we found it too sweet for our preferences.
