Serangoon Garden Food Centre

#1 – Poh Poh Roasted Chicken Rice

Introduction: The stall’s menu was standard just like any other chicken rice location. What sets Poh Poh Roasted Chicken Rice apart from any other restaurant is that they have various deals and handouts on their display. So be sure to watch out for any modifications to their menu. The chicken was soft and tender and not too dry. Dip it into the garlic chili or mix the chilli with the rice for extra oomph.

Menu Items:

  • Roasted Chicken + Sio Bak Rice (Price $4.00)
  • Chicken Rice + Roasted Meat (Price $4.00)
  • Roasted Meat Chicken Rice (Price $4.00)

#2 – Bossi Ban Mian

Introduction: At Bossi Ban Mian, we here only offer three noodle items: soup, dry, or their signature, and you can get them in either soup or dry form. Then you choose between a noodle of your choosing, along with any toppings you request. Another well-executed item was the seafood. Each of the seafood items was cooked separately to ensure that they weren’t overcooked, and this extra step really paid off. The abalone, although canned, was plump and chewy, the scallop was borderline firm with a bite, and the prawn was sweet and juicy.

Menu Items:

  • Noodle Soup (Price $4.00)
  • Dry Noodles (Price $5.00)
  • Signature Noodles (Price $8.00)

#3 – Garden Street Kway Chap

Introduction: Now, most Kway Chap stalls are no more than a dime a dozen, serving mediocre standards. But we’ve discovered a place in which the essence of this Teochew dish is truly captured: Garden Street Kway Chap at Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre! What we love most about Garden Street Kway Chap is they thoroughly clean the innards and there’s no stench. The Tau Pok would ooze gravy when we bit into it, making it all the more delectable — though the Tau Pok was slightly on the tougher side.

Menu Items:

  • Kway Chap (Price $5.00 – $10.00)

#4 – Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice

Introduction: Mr Ng Kim Seng, the proprietor, presented his Teochew braised duck recipe around 1965. He started a booth at Lim Tua Tow Market on Upper Serangoon Road. His children, Wendy Ng and Ng Teck Siah helped out after their school, by taking the orders, serving, and learning the recipe. He relocated the booth to Serangoon Garden Food Centre after the demolition of Lim Tua Tow Market. Wendy decided to take over this stall when it was time to move the main stall back to Serangoon Garden Food Centre. The Kway Chap set included the well-seared-and-garlicked big leftovers, braised eggs, fish cakes, braised sticky pastry, and braised duck that I added to their dinner. The flat rice sheets tasted aged and delicious served with braising sauce then enhanced with fried onions and cilantro.

Menu Items:

  • Whole Duck (Price $36.00)
  • Half Duck (Price $18.00)
  • Quarter Duck (Price $10.00)

Introduction: Located at Serangoon Garden Market & Food Center, Aliff Nasi Lemak is notable for using basmati rice instead of the traditional jasmine rice for Nasi Lemak. #8 – Soon Huat Pig’s Organ Soup

Introduction: Pig Organ Soup is not easily found around the hawker’s centre in Singapore. It is even harder to find a good one. This simple-looking dish is very hard to master, finding the right balance between the sweetness extracted from the pork with the bold flavor of the salted vegetables. Soon Huat Pig Soup is an early favorite stall at Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre, open for breakfast. It is usually closed before afternoon tea.

Menu Items:

  • Pig Organ Soup (Price $4.00/ $5.00/ $6.00)
