West Coast Food Centre

#1 – Ji Xing Hainanese Curry Rice

Introduction: One of the best Hainanese curry rice in the west part of Singapore can be found in West Coast Market and Food Center. Generous portions even for a guy, go for their braised pork, pork chop and chap chye. Their curry is not the very spicy type but more towards lemak, fragrant and flavourful. Food for the soul in a rainy day. (Wilson Foo from Burple)

#2 – Ming Kee Porridge

Introduction: Yes as compared to other congee / porridge stall in the vicinity, Ming Kee is no doubt the best. Pork porridge came with balls of marinated minced meat and was so tasty. Condiments like fried fritters, shredded ginger , spring onions, pepper and sesame oil were all available at the counter. Since its end of the business day, the generous lady poured a wholesome amount of fritters onto my bowl. Porridge was really good but when can I have such luck again to try on others kinds of congee? #3 – Sliced Fish. Fish Head. Seafood Soup

Introduction: Slice Fish Fish Head Seafood Soup? A stall with no name to be found even after having a hard time searching for it at every corner of the stall. My visit to West Coast Market Square was very frequent, at least 10 times a month and this stall is one of the many stalls that draws the crowd especially during meal times. Everytime, without fail, I get to see a neat queue form in front of the stall. Adding their homemade meatballs is definitely recommended. The meatballs were made up of minced meat with hints of salted fish. Bouncy and delicious, goes very well with the soup. The slices of fish given was fresh and thick with a smooth textural feel. (Umakemehungry.com)

#4 – Mei Feng Roasted Chicken Rice

Originally wasn’t going to write a review on this stall but honestly, to all the Westies, this stall serves up some legit roast chicken.

The STAR of the meal, the roasted chicken, was extremely moist, tender and succulent. The skin, while moist and slightly soggy was sinfully delicious, a thin layer of fat beneath it melting in your mouth with every bite. After my meal, I kind of regretted not ordering more roasted chicken and thinking of it now just makes me crave for more. If I could, I would have gladly ordered half a roast chicken just for myself. So for the Westies, if you have not tried this, you’re missing out. And for the rest of Singapore, truly worth giving their roast chicken a shot, just don’t make the same mistake as me 🙂 (Sean Chen from Burple)

Menu Items: Price start from $3

  • Pork Ribs Rice
  • Quarter Chicken
  • Chicken Thigh
  • Siobak

Location: 726 Clementi West Street 2 #01-181 West Coast Market Square, Singapore 120726

#5 – Hup Kee Braised Duck Rice Porridge Noodle

Introduction: A popular shop since the 1970s in West Coast food centre, this stall sells braised duck rice sets with sliced boneless braised duck meat, braised tofu, half a braised egg, and brown rice with several slices of cucumbers. The marinated pork belly slices are an optional add-on. The rice served is cooked with braised sauce giving it a brown hue. The rice is firm and very flavourful. On the sides is a bowl of nicely braised flavoured soup and a saucer of nice dried shrimp flavoured chilli paste that goes really well with the duck and rice.

Menu Items:

  • Braised Duck Rice (Price $3/$4)
  • Braised Duck Porridge (Price $3/$4)
  • Braised Duck Noodle (Price $3/$4)
  • Kway Chap (Price $3.50)

#6 – Soon Lee Fishball Noodles

Introduction: A bowl of Fishball Noodle ($2.50/$3) comes with some fish cake slices, fishball. meatball and a bit of minced meat. The noodle here is only decent with a rustic taste. If I a not wrong, the fishball and meatball should be factory supplied. The fishball is indeed very springy and bouncy but I hardly tasted any fish flavour in it. It even comes with a bit of saltiness that seems quite common with factory made fishball. The meatball fares better with its taste and texture. (Sgfoodonfoot.com)

Menu Items: Price start from $2.50

  • Fishball Noodle (Soup)
  • Fishball Noodle (Dry)
  • MInced Meat Noodle
  • Fishball Soup

#7 – Heng Li Noodle House

Introduction: The appearance of the Wanton Mee ($3) reminds me of the now defunct Kok Kee at Lavender. The wanton mee style is the more saucy type. For a three dollar portion, the char siew is rather generous. However it is a bit dry and too lean. The noodle is actually quite springy with a good bite to it. However I think the auntie which blanched the noodle did not quite rinsed off the blanching water from the noodle, causing the sauce to be diluted with a tad of alkaline taste. The chilli sauce was also mediocre. (Sgfoodonfoot.com)

Menu Items: Price start from $3

  • Prawn Noodle
  • Prawn Mee Pok
  • Laksa
  • Lor Mee

#8 – Hani Food Stall

Not the most fantastic Mee Rebus I had. The best I had was many years back at Bugis Junction Foodcourt (the one at the basement level) which has now moved to the 3rd level. Sadly, the stall that sold Mee Rebus has since ceased operations. Therefore, my Mee Rebus cravings can never be satisfied.

I was excited to find Food King’s review on Hani Food Stall. And even more so when Deekosh mentioned that the Mee Rebus was ‘Robust’! Thought I gave it a try and I did. As I have said earlier, it was not the most fantastic but they are very affordable. So if you are on budget and craving for some Mee Rebus, this plate is decent. (Gracee TLM from Burple)

  • Nasi Lemak (Price $3)
  • Mee Goreng (Price $3)
  • Mee Goreng Seafood (Price $4)

#9 – Jia Le Yong Tau Foo & Spinach Soup

Introduction: Tried their yong tau foo previously and had written the stall off. But this spinach soup ($3.50 + $0.50 for rice) impressed me so much!! First of all, the portion is huuuge. And secondly, the soup was so fragrant! It was filled with the requisite spinach, mushrooms and wolf berries. The prawns were sweet and succulent. Was also surprised to find chunks of minced meat inside, all seasoned well! This might become my go-to meal at the hawker centre (R Goh from Burple)

  • Fried Yong Tau Foo
  • Curry Yong Tau Foo

#10 – 88 Chicken Rice

Hainanese Chicken Rice by non Hainanese? Why not?

This Hokkien couple runs their Hainanese Chicken Rice stall in West Coast Market and Food Center. The stall only opens from 10.30am and by 12.30pm on most days, they are sold out. Yes it is that good. A long queue forms even before opening, to the extent that other stalls complains about its snaking queue blocking their customers/business.

They offer steamed chicken and roast chicken. Both are equally good although judging by the speed the steamed chicken is sold out, I am guessing that is the customers preference.

I bought half a chicken, 3 gizzards and 3 packets of rice for $14. So by all accounts, it’s not expensive. The rice is fluffy and fragrant, a winner by itself. The chicken is glistening on the exterior, tender and juicy when you bite down. The chilli sauce is leans towards the spicy and piquant side, great with steamed chicken. I need to add that the soya sauce is packed separately if you buy half chicken and they are very generous with their chilli sauce – you get an large bag of it. My one complaint is how the owner cuts the chicken. Some pieces tend to still be joined and this is not the bones free type.

This is my go to place when I require my Hainanese Chicken Rice fix these days. So no question whether I am coming back for more. (Wilson Foo from Burple)

Menu Items:

  • Chicken Rice (Price $3)
  • Chicken Rice Set (Price $4.50)
  • Chicken Drumstick (Price $3.50)
  • 2 Chicken Wings (Price $3.50)
