For those unfamiliar, let’s take a crash course for the iconic designer and his global brand.
A Brief History of Michael Kors
Born Karl Anderson Jr. in New York’s Long Island on 9 August 1959, he changed his name after his mother told him he could as she married Bill Kors. His affinity for fashion shined through even when he was five; Michael Kors actually re-designed his mother’s wedding dress for her second wedding. Soon, Kors design clothes and sold them from his parent’s basement.
A Heady Start
Kors studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1977, but only for two semesters. But that didn’t deter him from building his vision. Not too long after he decided to drop out of school, he designed his first fashion line when he went to work at Lothar’s, a French boutique. When it launched it May 1981, it even graced the shelves of the high-end department stores Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman
The Unprecedented Rise
Kors studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1977, but only for two semesters. But that didn’t deter him from building his vision. Not too long after he decided to drop out of school, he designed his first fashion line when he went to work at Lothar’s, a French boutique. When he launched his label in May 1981, it even graced the shelves of the high-end department store, Bergdorf Goodman just across the street.
His simple, elegant silhouettes easily charmed shoppers, and he travelled across the United States, setting up little fashion shows in private homes to showcase his designs. He even managed to convince the eminent Anna Wintour, then the editor of New York magazine to view his collection.
Small Setbacks and Wild Success
n 1993, his company had to file for bankruptcy in the United States as his licensing partner closed down. But he soon returned to the fold, launching a new, more affordable line by 1997. Then, he was also the first women’s ready-to-wear designer for Celine, the French couture house.
With Kors at the creative helm, he made a name for Celine as a ready-to-wear darling in the industry by infusing his fresh take to luxury sportswear. During his six-year stint at Celine, he was also expanding his own brand, creating a whole range of menswear, perfumes, and accessories.
Arriving Among the Stars
Kors left Celine in 2003 to fully concentrate on his own brand, before joining Project Runway, the reality show about fashion design. He immediately became an icon, winning the hearts of fans and critics with his sharp quips and blunt critique.
And soon, everyone from British Royalty to red-carpet royalty. Kate Middleton, Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift, and more, wore his creations to galas and events. Perhaps a true testament to his effortless chic is when Michelle Obama wore a simple, black number for her official portrait for the first term as the First Lady, and again during the 2015 State of the Union address.
Today, the Michael Kors boutique are fixtures in over cosmopolitans across the world. You can visit one in London, Istanbul, Paris, Seoul, New York, Rio de Janeiro, and more. But even as he runs a global fashion empire, Kors has been a tireless supporter of God’s Love We Deliver, a non-profit that cooks and delivers healthy meals to people with serious illnesses in and around New York, for the past 25 years.
