Singapore’s city hall is a striking structure, designed by British architect Norman Foster. Situated in the heart of the business district, it dominates the skyline. The building has a sleek, aerodynamic design and incorporates green spaces into its layout. The building was completed in 1998 and is one of the city-state’s most important landmarks. The City Hall in Singapore is a national monument gazetted on 14 February 1992. It can be found in front of the historical Padang and adjacent to the Supreme Court of Singapore, it was designed and built by the architects of the Singapore Municipal Commission, A. Gordans and F. D. Meadows from 1926 to 1929. There are many things to do in this area, and here’s our favourite top 10.

#2 – Asian Civilisations Museum

Introduction:

The Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) is an institution that forms a part of the four museums in Singapore, the other three being the Peranakan Museum at Old Tao Nan School, the National Museum of Singapore, and the Singapore Art Museum. It is one of the pioneering museums in the region to specialize in pan-Asian cultures and civilizations. The museum specializes in the material history of China, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia, from which the diverse ethnic groups of Singapore trace their ancestry.

#3 – Raffles City

Introduction: Managed by CapitaLand, Raffles City Singapore is a premier integrated complex comprising retail, commercial, hotels and convention centre space in the heart of Singapore’s Business District. Designed by world-renowned architect I M Pei to be the ‘city within a city’, Raffles City Singapore opened in 1986 and links the tourist and shopping artery of Orchard Road with the commercial and financial area in and around Raffles Place. The complex consists of Raffles City Singapore, Raffles City Tower, Raffles City Convention Centre, Swissotel The Stamford and Fairmont Singapore. Raffles City Singapore is a prime retail mall spread over five floors on storeys 1, 2, 3, and Basement Levels 1 & 2. #5 – Chijmes

Introduction: Chijmes is one of the top food and beverage, entertainment, and lifestyle destination located in the heart of Singapore’s Civic and Cultural District. #7 – St Andrew’s Cathedral

Introduction: St Andrew’s Cathedral is the oldest Anglican site of worship in Singapore. While much is known about the Cathedral’s existing building, relatively little is known about the church building that came before, which had its first foundation stone laid on Monday 9th November1835. St Andrew’s Church was fashioned in the Neo-Classical architectural style ofSingapore’s pioneer colonial architect G. D. Coleman, who was inspired by the symmetrical sensibilities of Classical Greek and Roman architecture. The church held its first service on 18 June 1837 and was consecrated a year later by the Right Revd Daniel Wilson, the Bishop of Calcutta who had jurisdiction over Singapore.

#9 – Victoria Theatre & Victoria Concert Hall

Introduction:

First established in 1862, the Victoria Theatre & Victoria Concert Hall is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Singapore. The heritage building located in the heart of the city’s Civic District contains a 614-seat Theatre and a 673-seat Concert Hall.

In 2010, the national monument underwent a four-year refurbishment to restore its neo-classical façade while getting new state-of-the-art facilities and amenities. The redevelopment also saw the addition of two smaller rooms for music, dance and theatre rehearsals.

Having played a role in the country’s history for over 150 years, the Victoria Theatre & Victoria Concert Hall continues to be an exciting mid-sized platform, supporting the growth of Singapore’s arts industry.

#10 – Civilian War Memorial

Introduction:

The Civilian War Memorial, located east of the Padang on Beach Road, commemorates these civilian victims of World War II and the unity of Singapore’s four main races—Malay, Chinese, Indian and Eurasian. It was unveiled by former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on 15 February 1967— the day that Singapore fell to Japanese forces 25 years ago—and gazetted as a national monument in 2013.

About

  • It was constructed after mass graves of civilian war victims were found in several locations around Singapore in 1962. More than 40 of these mass graves came from Siglap’s so-called Valley of Death.
  • Every year on 15 February, a memorial service is held here, in remembrance of the victims of the war.
