t Acupuncture in Christchurch

#1 – Advanced Acupuncture Redwood Clinic

Introduction:

There are three clinics in Christchurch. The acupuncture that we use in Christchurch is a time-tested therapy that has been practiced in the Far East for thousands of years.

The philosophy behind acupuncture is that energy lines or meridians circulate around the body. These meridians contain our energy flow or Qi. It is when this Qi is impaired through the body that imbalance and illness occur. In acupuncture, the insertion of fine needles at various points on the meridian redirects energy to where it is needed most. In this way, the body’s balance can be restored and the illness resolved.

Acupuncture understands that the flow of energy can be disrupted in many ways: emotional upset, physical trauma, poor diet, or overwork, are all common examples. By examining the underlying cause and how it has affected the body, the most appropriate treatment for the patient can be selected. Treating the patient as an individual is at the core of the acupuncture treatment and it is this that helps allow the body to rebalance itself.

#4 – Celia Monk Physiotherapy

Introduction:

With more than 30 years experience in physiotherapy, treating musculoskeletal conditions and injuries, Celia Monk has a long standing reputation for helping her patients get active and pain-free.

Celia began practicing as a physiotherapist in 1989 at Lower Hutt Hospital. She then broadened her experience; first by working in private practice in the Wellington region, then managing a McKenzie Institute practice and finally owning her own practice, the Wainuiomata Sports Injury and Spinal Centre.

Celia’s passion is to help people achieve their potential and live life to the full – whether that is through pain-free functional activity or by discovering real value and purpose in their lives.

Having worked at the McKenzie Institute early in her physiotherapy career, Celia saw first-hand how patients could treat their own backs using the McKenzie Method and become pain-free. Her interest in the McKenzie Method blossomed and in 1993 she gained the International Diploma from the Institute. By 2003, she was Chairman of the McKenzie Institute and by 2007, a qualified McKenzie Instructor, being promoted as a Senior Instructor within the McKenzie Institute International, which she continued until 2015.

Celia gained her Master in Physiotherapy Degree with distinction from Otago University in 2021. Her research explored supporting self-management for people with low back pain. Celia was awarded the Walker Postgraduate Prize for her thesis.

#8 – Christchurch Osteopathy Acupuncture

Introduction:

Early in the history of Osteopathy, the American Osteopathic Association (Osteopathy originated in the USA) adopted this definition of Osteopathy (attributed to the American Osteopath Dr C B Atzen):

Osteopathy is the name of that system of the healing art which places chief emphasis on the structural integrity of the body mechanism as being the most important single factor in the maintenance of the well-being of the organism in health or disease.”

Although most modern Osteopaths would not necessarily support any claim that the “structural integrity of the body . . . as being the single most important factor“, it is important to realize that the early American Osteopaths took this notion quite seriously, or at least considered alterations in body structural integrity as very important. I think the important point being made here is that altered biomechanics and altered body structural integrity can have far-reaching implications, beyond just perhaps causing muscle and joint pain. Compression on spinal nerve roots, from subluxations and spinal lesions (malposition or altered position of the spinal vertebrae, or other anomalies, facet hypertrophy, disc protrusions/ herniations, etc) may affect the peripheral nerves resulting in such symptoms as tingling, pins and needles down the leg or arm, and can perhaps effect the autonomic nervous system also, having perhaps a widespread influence on the general health and well-being of the body.
