Their mission is to provide a variety of innovative outdoor gears and equipment to promote outdoor activity and contribute back to the climbing community in Malaysia.
Outdoor gear needs to be well maintained in order for it to function properly. Ensuring that climbers know this and making sure that they know how to use their purchased gears will also be one of their goals. They hope that this will breed the next generation of climbers who will champion this sport keeping it safe and passing this trait on to future generations.
Harnessing themselves with 10+ years of experience on moving vertically they have collaborated and learned from many associations and individuals that have helped them tremendously in getting them to where they are now. #8 – Bolder Ventures Climbing Gym
Introduction:
BV 1.0
Bolder Ventures first opened its doors in 2011. Its brainchild, Safwan, was inspired by his climbing trips to India and South Africa, where he drew inspiration from the outdoors, and sought to bring that experience indoors in a climbing gym of his own. Being a small establishment, he focused on technical, quality routesetting, offering climbers a space that was different from the other bigger gyms.
As a routesetter, Safwan is always learning to improve his craft. In 2015, he joined the routesetting team lead by Olympian, Akiyo Noguchi, to set for the Gravical competition in Singapore. This stint opened doors for him within the local and international industry.
In 2016, BV underwent a renovation to remove the roof and put in place a wall for coordination and slab climbing. It was from then on that BV became a training ground for the elite Malaysian Team to train for international competitions such as the World Cup 2017 in Chongqing, and the Asian Games 2018 in Palembang. Through raising the bar of routesetting in Malaysia, Safwan has turned BV into a gym for climbers of all levels to learn and improve their skillset.
BV 2.0
On 18 December 2021, Bolder Ventures was hit by a catastrophic flood that saw the gym suffer major losses to its infrastructure.
After 6 months of clean-ups and constructions, BV 2.0 finally reopened its doors on 13 May 2022.
The new gym is furnished with dark, wooden panels and simple angles to represent a boat that’s riding a wave. The design and its grading system pays homage to Japanese climbing gyms, which Safwan spent time in as a guest routesetter in 2019. During his stint there, he enjoyed the nuanced puzzle-like complexitiy of their boulder problems, and used it as inspiration for BV 2.0’s routes that climbers can enjoy.
