Top 10 Best Eats at Market Street Food Centre

#1 – Wei Nan Wang Lor Mee

Introduction:

Wei Nan Wang Hock Kian Lor Mee is a popular stall selling lor mee containing lots of meaty bits. As for as I can tell, this bowl of Lor Mee comes with lean braised pork slices, braised pork belly, braised pig skin, fried pork balls, and crispy fried flour bits served with yellow noodles in a starchy sauce.

The lean braised pork slices are meaty and somewhat chewy. The braised pork belly is meaty with a bit of fat. As for the pig skin, chewy and nicely flavored. The fried pork balls are has a nice crispy batter and a nice chewy texture. The crispy flour bits are crispy nice too. I like them all.

The yellow noodles are springy with a starchy sauce. This sauce is very flavourful with a bit of sweet taste to it. This bowl of Lor Mee is absolutely lovely! Truly enjoyable.

#2 – Hock Gooi Hainanese Curry Rice

The first is the chicken cutlet. It has a nice crispy crust with moist meaty flesh. Its flavourings are nice and its skin is crispy and flavourful. Rather likeable. Next, the stir-fried mixture of bean sprouts and vegetables is moist and crunchy with decent flavours. The fried egg is quite ordinary though. As for the rice and curry. The rice has a nice firm texture and the curry sauce has a mildly spicy taste. An optional sambal chilli with a slightly sweet and salty taste is available for you to add on according to your liking.

#3 – Say Seng Authentic Teochew Mee Pok

Introduction:

A very simple but extremely satisfying dish! Even the regular amount of chilli is pretty spicy so we recommend asking for less chilli if you can’t handle spice too well. The soups and noodles are all topped with coriander, which spring onions are generally used, so do be cautious of this if you don’t like it! At lunchtime (from 11 am onwards) the small dishes are $4 each, but for breakfast, the shop offers mini-sized bowls from $3 which is perfect for when you’re feeling peckish but not too hungry. The prawns are boiled to the most suitable degree and come peeled so we found them easier to eat. Uncle Heng, the owner, was very nice and open and taught us about his Mee Pok. The ingredients are simple, consisting of just chilli flakes, vinegar, soy sauce and sesame oil. The fried garlic and lard are fried in-house from 4 am every morning, so they are served freshly crunchy and crisp! The noodles have a generous helping of toppings considering its $4 price tag too! I suggest you enjoy it by mixing the chilli flakes with the noodles. According to Uncle Heng, the pepper can be on the stronger side (which varies depending on staff) but we personally think that’s a uniquely cute feature of the place ^-^! If you’re ever in the CBD area, We’d definitely recommend you to try Uncle Heng’s Mee Pok!

#8 – Golden Nur

Introduction:

Hawker stalls that are solely managed within the family are increasingly few in this day and age. But for Ms Nur Syahiirah and her relatives, the Golden Nur family business has been their bread and butter for the last 40 years, ever since they first opened at the now-defunct Golden Shoe Hawker Centre.

Currently located at the Market Street Interim Hawker Centre, Golden Nur occupies a row of three stalls. The mainstay nasi briyani unit is flanked by one selling nasi campur to its left, and another for mee soto and mee rebus to its right. Ms Syahiirah and her mother focus their attention mainly on Golden Nur, while her aunts and uncles take charge of the neighbouring stalls. Despite this, everyone chips in to help whenever it gets busy.
