Top 10 Best Eats at Ayer Rajah Food Centre

Ayer Rajah Food Cenre was formerly a standalone food centre that was originally built in 1979. Meanwhile, the Ayer Rajah Market was completed in 1995 to complement the food centre. The food centre houses 80 cooked food stalls while the market has 40 market stalls. If you are here at AFFC (as commonly known), here’s our top 10 picks.

#1 Tokyo BBQ Stingray

Introduction:

They’ve got a 30-year history and a reputation for dishing out one of the best plates of sambal stingray. Tokyo at Ayer Rajah Food Centre is an underrated institution. The hawker only serves the meatiest parts of the ray, which means customers won’t have to be scraping off skin and the little bits of flesh off the ends. Every bite here counts. The sambal has more tang than the usual sweet variants but it’s no less tasty.

  • Hotplate Squid

#4 – A. Rashid Khan

Introduction:

Chilling out at my favourite neighbourhood and having a plate of mee goreng (non-spicy) and kambing (mutton) soup at Ayer Rajah Food Centre, after running errands all day today. This hawker center is my family’s go-to place whenever we are craving for Muslim food. The satisfying and hearty mutton soup from A. Rashid Khan has a good flavor that is not too heavy and intense. The best way to enjoy the soup is dipping the accompanied soft bread loaf to soak up the tasty mutton broth. YUM! (AC Chan from Burple)

Menu Items:

  • Mutton Soup
  • Mee Siam
  • Roti John

#5 – N.M. Abdul Rahim

Introduction:

N.M. Abdul Rahim probably has the best mee hoon goreng ikan bilis in Singapore. This mee hoon goreng is prepared with dried red chili, egg, other vegetables, sweet potato, and ikan bilis. The mee hoon goreng’s stir-fried flavor is delicious, it is not oily, and the aromas are soothing.

#6 – Habib’s Rojak

Introduction:

Located in Ayer Rajah Food Centre, Habib’s Rojak has been around for 30 years.
Habib is the second-generation owner of the stall. His father started the business in 1989 and interestingly named it after him when he was about a year old. How fitting since he’s running the stall now! He started helping out at the stall at a very young age. From peeling potatoes and eggs, Habib eventually took over the stall about 10 years ago.

Menu Items:

  • Tempeh
  • Coconut Flour
  • Potato Flour

#7 – 真之味 Hong Kong Yummy Soup

Introduction:

The menu is concise: just six types of soups are offered at the stall daily. The bestsellers are the variations of soup boiled from pork spare ribs with lotus root, winter melon or mushrooms, and Xie’s signature broth is the night-blooming cereus spareribs soup or ba wang hua soup. At the stall, the couple makes every soup from scratch with no MSG, with each ingredient carefully chosen for its nutritive and health benefits. While night-blooming cereus is consumed for its “cooling” and detoxification properties, cordyceps flower is good for rebuilding strength for people with weak constitutions or those recovering from an illness. “If we’re talking about soups that are good for ladies or if they want something good for their skin, then I’d recommend the Brazilian mushroom soup with snow fungus,” Xie says.

Menu Items:

  • Lotus Root Pork Ribs
  • Winter Melon Pork Ribs
  • Steamed Pork Patty with Pumpkin

#8 – Ah Hua Teochew Fishball Noodles

Introduction:

Located in the west side of Singapore in Pandan Gardens, Ah Hua Teochew Fishball Noodle garnered a lot of media attention in 2020 because the fishballs for their fishball noodles are handmade at their stall on a daily basis.

While handmade fishballs are not exactly uncommon in Singapore (but it is getting rarer), this stall goes the extra mile by hand-making other fish paste items like flat fish rulers and fish vegetable rolls.

Menu Items:

  • Fishball Noodles
  • Handmade Fish Dumplings
  • Yong Tau Fu

#10 – Power Rojak Bandung

Introduction:

Rojak Bandung Sotong is a Singapore dish which got no association with the Indonesian City, Bandung. Rojak Bandung Sotong is Rojak with shrimp paste, Cuttlefish with Kang Kong, and Satay Bee Hoon combined into one big mess. I was a bit comprehensive, but I realised my worries were unfounded after the first bite. You can either call this a noodle dish or call it is a salad. Nevertheless, the Bee Hoon with lots of grounded peanuts is good till the last drop. (Burgernbacon.com)

  • Chicken Porridge
