  • Improvements on the animal zone on the eastern side of the property, with a purpose-built goat house and milking area, a hay and storage shed and  new  paddock areas and fencing has improved animal viewing areas for visitors and provided better access for school groups and farm tour activities.

#5 – Ramarro Farm

Introduction:

Ramarro Farm is a market garden located in the Dandenong Ranges about an hour east of Melbourne. They grow a large range of vegetables, fruits, leaves and herbs, most of which are supplied to Melbourne and Sydney’s best restaurants.

They farm on two sites, both in the small and aptly named suburb of The Patch. The area features a mix of red volcanic soil and mountain soil rich in organic matter, which create prime growing conditions when combined with an average of 1200 millimetres of rain received each year.

Their farming practices are sustainable and chemical free. They focus on flavour, freshness, abundance and quality all the while committing to the health of the environment they grow in. In addition to their 3.5 acres of vegetable production they have also planted over 200 fruit trees.

About

  • The ‘Ramarro’ or Lacerta Viridis is a small, green lizard found commonly across Italy. During long days in the Italian fields learning their trade, the ramarro became their work companions, basking in the sun as they toiled.
  • With a background working in the hospitality industry alongside some of Melbourne’s most talented chefs, it was only natural that we began selling their produce to them during their first season in 2014. As word spread about their farm so did their customer list and in 2019 they decided to expand and become full-time farmers to keep up with demand. They love working with chefs and believe the dialogue between chef and farmer makes both their products better.

#7 – Warratina Lavender Farm

Introduction:

Their lavender farm is in the Yarra Valley at the foothills of Mt Dandenong, a 1-hr drive from Melbourne.

Back in 1991, Annemarie planted out a small plot of lavender on land which had once been a cherry orchard. It began as a hobby, but soon people began coming up the driveway, asking what time we were open til – they wanted to come and see the lavender growing.

And so over the years the farm gradually expanded & now has over 10,000 lavender plants and is visited and much loved by tourists from around the world.

About

  • The lavender grown on the farm is harvested annually between Nov-Jan, early morning, by hand, using a traditional sickle. The harvested bunches are then taken to the Drying Shed where they are hung to dry before being stripped on a machine. The stripped lavender is sifted three times to remove any unwanted leaves, sticks and dust.
  • Their dried lavender is used in cooking, as decoration, and in household and beauty products.
