Top 10 Best Popiah in Singapore

#4 – Old Long House Popiah

Introduction: In the past, popiah was (still is) a household dish. Almost every family knew how to make it. The moms will prepared the filling and popiah skin. Then the kids will surrounded the dinning table and started wrapping them. But this activity is getting lesser over these few years.

Popiah is a very simple dish. The owner hand-made every skin. He will grab a ball of very thick batter and spread a thin layer on to the hot plate. Fried it for less than 2mins. If the skin got too thick, the popiah will taste very heavy. If too thin, it can’t contain the juicy turnip. (Peter Wong from Burple)

Menu Items:

  • Popiah ($1.70)
    • DIY POPIAH + KUEH PIE TEE CUPS

#5 – Hainan Cuisine & Snacks

Introduction: Mdm Yeoh Min Lin started the business by happenstance; after her husband died, she had to provide for her five children, went into kueh-making by selling bread and buns in the market right next to Kim Keat Palm Market and Food Centre. After that, she wanted to give her own stall a distinctive edge, so she made her specialty Hainanese kueh.

It’s heartening to know that traditional stalls like Hainan Cuisine & Snacks still exist nowadays and that it hasn’t faded away with the onslaught of time and modernity.

Menu Items:

  • Ang Ku Kueh($1.30 per )
  • Homemade Yi Bua ($1.20)

#6 – Min Kee Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle

Introduction: The queue for this Wanton mee is always. so. long. Thankfully, we managed to visit the stall at a relatively offpeak period, which by the way, still has a queue. And we can see why – the portion was generous.

It is rare to find wanton noodle with a filling portion, usually we eat one plate and feel like we could go for another. But they were generous with the noodles, the char siew and the dumpling. the noodles were tasty – and we think this could be because they cooked it with pork lard.

The dumpling filling is delish too! Overall, worth our queue.

Menu Items:

  • Wanton Noodles ($3, $4)
  • Dumpling Noodles ($4, $5)
  • Wanton Soup ($3 for 10pcs)
  • Fried Wanton ($3 for 10pcs)

#7 – Ah Huat Minced Meat Noodle

Introduction: A moderately slow line that lured my attention, promoting Minced Meat Noodles, Dumpling Noodles, Fish Maw Kway Teow Soup, and Abalone Minced Meat Noodles.

They serve generous portions for their Minced Meat Noodles, and it comes with braised mushrooms and pig skin (if you like that).

#8 – Sims Place Toa Payoh Branch Chwee Kueh

Introduction: The chwee kueh were fresh at the stall – I could see all the chwee kueh making paraphernalia (little cups, trays, steaming tower, etc). Many kueh stalls today do not make their own kueh, and the kueh is made in a central kitchen and delivered.

Forty cents each, the chwee kueh came generously smothered with stewed chopped chai poh (preserved radish) and a scoop of chili paste (optional)

Menu Items:

  • Chwee Kueh
    • $0.4 (per piece)
    • $1.60 (4 pieces)

#9 – Dove Desserts

Introduction: This stall is always highly rated for Chendol. There was a long queue during lunch hours. In terms the green chendol jelly….it’s truly the best chendol jelly I’ve ever tasted. The fragrance of the Pandan plus a light sweetness…different from what you get outside, which are tasteless!

Worth every cent of the $1.50 price, which isn’t actually even expensive, because though a small portion, they were generous with the red beans and chendol.

Menu Items:

  • Chendol ($1.5)
  • Ice Kachang
  • ABC (Air Batu Campur)
