Top 10 Best Eats at Pek Kio Food Centre

The Pek Kio Shopping and Food Centre neighborhood seems stuck in time. Even though it’s south of Novena and Little India, it’s only quieter than most. Pek Kio Market & Food Centre would seem to epitomize this nostalgic atmosphere. Many of the stall owners have been there for decades: this only adds to that kampung feel. Here’s our top 10 picks at Pek Kio!

Top 10 Best Eats at Pek Kio Food Centre

#1 -Heng Leong Carrot Cake

Introduction: Unlike many places where carrot cake fragments are minced into tiny cubes, here they weren’t minced but quartered or halved so we were grateful for the larger size. In addition, there were many eggs in the dish, but the flavour was slightly modified because of the sweetish sauce. All the components in a mouthful were balanced, and we liked how the fluffiness and softness of the radish cake exterior complemented the softer inside and crunchy outside from the egg and radish mixture.

  • Black Carrot Cake (Price $1.50)
  • White Carrot Cake (Price $1.50)

#8 – Soon Kee Wanton Mee

Introduction: Though the bigger portion was just a $0.50 difference, I find that the portion was rather generous not only for the noodles but also the slices of char siew. The noodles were slightly thicker than the usual Mee Kia I had and was springy. The sauce they use was slightly different from the usual ones we have and indeed, it has a familiar old school taste. Besides that, the Char Siew was home made too.

What makes Soon Kee’s wanton mee so outstanding? Unlike other stalls that rely on supplied char siew, Soon kee roasts its own.

The noodles were soft yet springy at the same time, and had no trace of alkaline at all. The noodles don’t clump together, and stayed springy.

SK’s wanton mee chili is extremely spicy, extra care needed!

This is one wanton mee that you definitely mustn’t miss!

Menu Items:

  • Wanton Noodles ( Price From $3.50 / $4 )
  • Dumpling Noodles ( Price From $3.50 / $4 )

#9 – Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodle

Introduction: Established in 1951, long before the archaic hawker centers we know of today were even in existence, Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodles has been serving their prawn noodles to loyal customers for 70 years. So far, they have been honoured with many awards, including an honourable Michelin plate, for their incredible decade of experience in serving a delectable bowl of prawn noodles. Each prawn, near the size of my hand, was plump and juicy, without being stringy or overcooked. These were unquestionably fresh, briny, jam-packed with the sweetness.

Menu Items:

  • Prawn Noodles ( Priced From $5 / $10 )
  • Big Prawn Noodles ( Priced From $15 / $20 / $25 )

Kindly contact them for more pricing and etc. via the phone number below.

#10 – Yean Heng Pancake

Introduction: You get a choice of coconut or pancake fillings, and either a traditional or crispy pancake. I chose the traditional coconut pancake. It came piping hot. I really liked the pancake dough, which was thin and crisp at the edge, and soft and chewy in the middle. The dough is chewier than other places, a bit on the mochi spectrum of dough. The coconut filling was not too sweet and just right in amount. The portion of both the dough and the filling is good for a snack, satisfying min jiang kueh cravings without loading up on the calories.

Menu Items:

  • Traditional Pan Cake ( Price From $0.60 )
  • Crispy Pan Cake ( Price From $0.60 )
  • Pan Cake Special ( Price From $0.60 )
  • Putu Mayam ( Price From $0.60 )
  • Pineapple Tart ( Price From $0.60 )
