8. Curry Times

About:

Established in 1956 along Mackenzie Road near the Rex Cinema, Old Chang Kee’s humble beginnings are synonymous with the fond memories of Singaporeans, young and old, taking mouthfuls of curry that burst with flavourful enjoyment every bite, complemented with the crispy goodness of fragrant, freshly fried pastry.

Founded by Old Chang Kee, a largely popular local snack chain, Curry Times restaurant is a new dine-in concept, specializing in curry dishes. Set in a nostalgic setting reminiscent of the glorious days of Mama’s home-cooked food, Curry Times aims to bring back flavours and dishes from the past to be enjoyed once again. Featuring an extensive menu with food items paying homage to traditional recipes such as the Curry Chicken, Fish Head Curry and Dry Curry Chicken Rice.

Known affectionately as ‘Rex curry puffs’, people travelled from every corner of Singapore to get a taste of the perfect snack. Every curry puff was made with painstakingly prepared ingredients; succulent curried potatoes, bite-sized chicken nibblets, slices of boiled egg, mixed into a perfect combination of herbs and curry spices, creating the flawless flavour and texture that Singaporeans have came to love over the past five decades.

In addition to being a one-stop-shop for all things curry, their menu also showcases non-spicy and vegetarian food options, coupled with a variety of traditional drinks and desserts like the Yam Paste with Gingko Nuts and Bubur Cha Cha.

9. Yakiniku Like

About:

Tucked away on a narrow cherry blossom-lined street, Tokyo’s very first kissaten, or tearoom, welcomed its first customers some 125 years ago. Serving handmade sweets, fragrant teas and dark, strong coffees, the distinct charm of kissatens lay in their cosy atmospheres coupled with warm, homey service.

As the years rolled by, aside from the traditional sweet treats and home-brewed beverages, kissatens began serving light refreshments such as sandwiches, alongside heartier comfort fare including kare raisu (curry rice) and Japanese-style spaghetti.

Meanwhile, as French-Japanese relations grew stronger in recent decades, French artisanal cooking techniques and influences started to permeate the Japanese cuisine. It wasn’t long before food establishments around Japan, including kissatens, started serving foods native to France – think warm, fluffy soufflés, creamy parfaits, crusty French breads and buttery, flaky pastries.

In spite of this influence, the Japanese, proud of their own fresh produce and flavours, would oftentimes infuse a local twist to these French dishes. You would have matcha (green tea) and azuki (red beans) beautifully married into lush French soufflés.

And it was in this wonderful melting pot of flavours that lay the inspiration behind Miam Miam. Inspired by the grace and old-school charm of kissatens, the fresh flavours and ingredients of Japanese cuisine, together with French artisanal cooking techniques, Miam Miam promises a delicious experience through and through. Using only the freshest, sustainable-sourced ingredients, Miam Miam takes pride in bringing the best of both French-Japanese cuisines to you.
