#4 – Ikki Izakaya

Introduction:

IKKI is the little known Japanese incarnation of “bottoms up”. The kanji or chinese letters are extremely apt, literally translating it to “one breath”. And at IKKI, lunch is like a battlefield, with the kitchen dishing out lunch sets after lunch sets, the staff seemingly holding their breath until the whole ordeal is over.
Transitioning to the lull afternoon timing, IKKI brings their own blend of artisanal coffee with buttermilk waffles, Japanese style. The buttermilk waffles are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, with a Japanese twist. On top of the standard maple and butter variety, IKKI uses salty sweet mitarashi and red bean or yuzu jam.
Night, at IKKI, is a different affair altogether. The whole place slows down and the menu changes from lunch sets to Yakitori or barbecued skewers and a plethora of Japanese tapas that allows the customers to eat and drink at their leisure. And to keep the festivities going, IKKI features local bands playing from Tuesday to Friday.
The Yakitori and barbecued skewers are done over a grill with bincho tan that lends an oak-like smokiness to the meats and vegetables. While popularly consumed with cold beer, IKKI recommends its own pairing of infused sho chu highball or other wise known as chu-hi.

Menu Items:

  • Truffle Ramen (Price $17.80)

#10 – Orange & Teal Café

Introduction:

It’s been a long-term dream of ours to have a place where Singaporeans come together to not just have a great meal or have that heartwarming cuppa, but a place where we get together with their loved ones and friends and get to know each other all over again. A place where intelligent discussion, even impassioned debate, takes place. A place where the conversation’s even better.

“Where the conversation’s even better” – I’ve got that engraved above the doorway.

Many of you who’ve seen the place say it looks warm and cosy. That’s what Mei and I had in mind when we first decided on the project. They wanted a place where Singaporeans can dine in elegance or chat away in a cosy corner or simply pull out a book with a coffee and enjoy a moment of solitude. Their idea is to serve up quality without burning your week’s wages.

In a way, the café is an extension of their home where music, books and loved ones matter most. That’s why they had a piano and books brought in.

In time to come, they hope the cafe will become a place of comforting familiarity for you, like an old shoe wrapped snugly around those tired soles. And with great food, it’ll be like home away from home.

Menu Items:

  • NEW Slow-braised Beef Cheeks (Price $25.90)
  • Poulet Roti (Price $14.9)
