Teck Ghee Market & Food Centre

#1 – Bendemeer Fresh Cockles Fried Kway Tiao

Introduction: Recommended by The Straits Times. After reading about in the 20 restaurants to eat in central Singapore, I decided to come here the next day. The 20 minute wait was even acceptable during lunch. The kway teow was soggy and firm. The wok hei was there, but there was a bit of the iron or cockle taste that I didn’t like so much. (but if you are a cockle lover then it’s all good for you).

Menu Items:

  • Fresh Cockles Fried Kway Tiao ( Price from $5)

Location: 409 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, #01-13, Singapore 560409

#2 – Eng Ho Fried Hokkien Mee

Introduction: If you order the dish to be customized to your preferences, there are diced squid, heaps of chili, lime, and sliced pork on the standard menu. Good portions of noodles for S$5, and I particularly love the noodles with some chili as the chili is great. Some Hokkien Mee come with various bits of pork lard, but not the one from Eng Ho, and I don’t find it a significant omission.

Menu Items:

  • Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee ( Price from $3)

Location: 409 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, #01-34, Singapore 560409

#3 – Han Jiang Fish Soup

Introduction: Instead of using the less expensive Batang fish than the pit viper (Suwai), the Han Jiang Fish Soup features the more expensive animal. The thickness of the fish slices, though, was inconsistent, some were very thick, making it hard to get a desirable result, while the thick slice was supposed to lengthen the cooking process.

Menu Items:

  • Fish Soup
  • Fish porridge

Location: Blk 409, Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, #01-15, Teck Ghee Square, Singapore 560409

#4 – 33 Vegetarian Food

Introduction: It was such a long queue during lunch hours, I really appreciate the friendly owner for understanding my dietary preference and cleared my doubt on whether they still use planta margarine (with food additive from animal origins) to flavour their rice. The rice is suitable for vegans. I tried set A @$6.80 – a complete meal with flavorful rice, steamed mock “chicken”, roasted mock “chicken”, cai xin vegetables, winter melon soup, achar (Asian pickles) and 3 types of condiments (chilli with added fresh lime juice, dark soya sauce and minced ginger). Love their food presentation which resembles the famous hotel chicken rice set! Their food is not salty or greasy, the taste is just right and serving portion is generous. I also ordered a side dish, mung bean sprouts, for added nutrition. It was such a satisfactory meal.

Menu Items:

  • Mock Chicken Rice
  • Thai Vegetarian Chicken

#5 – Shi Xian (Mee Rebus, Mee Siam)

Introduction: Shi Xian is a regular favorite at Teck Ghee Food Center for good reason. Their Mee Siam gravy is made out of homemade stock and gives off an aromatic flavor that makes the dish stand out among others. Mixed with a medley of sliced eggs, rice vermicelli, and a dollop of chili; it’s nothing fancy in presentation, but the appetizing flavors will have you wiping up the entire bowl in no time.

Menu Items:

  • Mee Rebus
  • Mee Siam

#6 – Lai Lai Heng Wanton Noodle

Introduction: Mixing their sauces aroused the noodles, which were well suited to their place of origin and basic in taste. Taste of even if they were nothing spectacular at first was delicious, and they got their main fare right. That was the first confirmation that we got. Char siew slices were slightly tough and sparsely given. The star of this signature dish comes in the form of their braised pork ribs. The size of a roughly a quarter of the plate, the flesh LITERALLY fell from the soft bones.

Menu Items:

  • Wanton Noodle

#7 – Long Kee Carrot Cake

Introduction: With only one type of carrot cake on the menu, this stall still attract a long queue in the morning. As the auntie handling the whole stall by herself, including frying the carrot cake. So do give some patience while waiting for your turn to order. I like how they are cut in a longer size, and you could see auntie fried them together with egg. From just $2.50, you could get a decent plate of it like this. (Khaw Han Chung from Burple)

  • Carrot Cake (Price from $2.50)

#8 – Hup Seng Huat Cooked Food

Introduction: The wantons at this place are really really good. Generously stuffed with minced pork and shrimp, with a little bit of turnip for that nice crunch. Got to know about this store as it started delivering frozen wantons and wanton mee during the circuit breaker. Prices are mad affordable cus the 老板娘 wants to keep prices low for the old folk living in the area!! (Caro!! from Burple)

Menu Items:

  • Char Siew Wanton Mee (Price from $3.50)

#9 – Long Xing Fish Porridge

Introduction: This is one famous fish soup stall at 409 Hawker Centre, and I can definitely see why! The medium portion of double fish soup bee hoon ($5.50) was a huge portion, with quite a generous amount of fish slices! The batang slices were so fresh and were in huge thick pieces. The fried fish slices are pretty wholesome too, especially when dipped in the salted bean sauce 😍 Quite value for money, I can imagine myself coming here when I’m around the area! (Jason Ng from Burple)

#10 – Seng Hee Vegetarian Food stall

Introduction: A simple vegetarian stall in the Hawker Centre environment, that sells Fried Bee Hoon. If you love simple and plain Fried Bee Hoon, you’ll like this stall. I ordered the Fried Bee Hoon and a deep fried Popiah and cost me $2 only. The Bee Hoon is tasty and popiah is real crispy and nice.
